Most chase sequences will result in death depending on the prowess of the player, and so the there is a slow burn to this game that generally ends with a heart-pounding chase or a truly relieving escape, and most of the time until then is notably less bombastic. And usually each time you are found by the monster it does result in death, which means a lot of the gameplay cycle in this game consists of simply finding items and staying out of site. However finding any items is easier said than done, as the ship layout changes every time you play, as well as randomly throwing in one of three monsters to escape from. Each of these escape methods require their own set of objectives to complete but the vast majority of these are simply finding the necessary components aboard the ship, so most of the time you will attempt to escape based on the required items you’ve already picked up. You can complete the game through a variety of ways, including escaping via helicopter, life boat, or submarine. While the “character with amnesia” trope is one that is commonly used in most horror games to ill effect, it never felt too forced here, as your sole objective is to leave the ship with no overarching story thrown in. Monstrum starts you off as a an unnamed character who is aboard a seemingly empty ship, with no recollection of who he is and why he is there. Get killed in Monstrum and you’ll be starting again. Use distractions to attract the monster to you, or, perhaps more wisely, to where you’ve just been, but be careful not to run too fast lest you fall into one of the ships numerous traps along the way. Opportunities and Hazards Use whatever you can find to try and outwit the monster. Escape Routes Discover different methods of escape and delve into the bowels of the ship to recover items you need to repair them. And will the same actions work every time? Procedural Arena Prepare for a different gameplay environment each time you play as the ship’s interior shifts shape with every run, changing the location of items along the way.
